Former President Bill Clinton’s mythic political skills face a major test when he takes the rostrum at the Democratic convention Wednesday, looking past his disappointment — some say anger — to speak in support of Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton passed the same test Tuesday night with a soaring rhetorical paean to her own historic run to be America’s first woman commander in chief and a convincing call for her backers to unify behind Obama.

The largest single-workplace immigration raid in U.S. history has caused panic among Hispanic families in this small southern Mississippi town, where federal agents rounded up nearly 600 plant workers suspected of being in the country illegally.

One worker caught in Monday’s sweep at the Howard Industries transformer plant said fellow workers applauded as immigrants were taken into custody.

Three men who were in Denver with sniper rifles, camouflage clothing, bullet-proof vest and rental trucks who had talked about killing Barack Obama posed “no credible threat” to the Democratic presidential candidate’s life, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday.

US Attorney Troy Eid, who charged the three men this week on lesser weapons and drug charges, described the suspects simply as “meth-heads” whose drug-addled fantasies of killing Obama were merely “aspirational.”

The Ohio Republican Party funneled $495,000 into an account used to support the candidacy of former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell that should have only been used to support candidates for national office.

The letter says Ohio’s Republican party collected nearly half a million dollars from a federal GOP account in October 2006.

John McCain is planning to roll out his vice presidential nominee in three battleground states this weekend, with large-scale rallies planned for Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri, according to aides and advisers.

If Barack Obama is really going to redraw the political map this year, this isn’t a bad place to start. Colorado’s nine electoral votes have gone blue in only one of the last 10 elections, but they look within Obama’s reach now according to recent polling. The same goes for nearby Nevada (with five votes) and New Mexico (also five). If John McCain weren’t from Arizona, its 10 votes might be up for grabs, too. Latino voters are a big reason that Democrats may find new electoral power in the West. Obama’s chances of winning, if he can’t carry the Southern states and can’t turn Ohio blue again, could well come down to how successful his outreach to the Latino community is here and in neighboring states.
