PLANES PREPARE TO BATTLE BOULDER COUNTY WILDFIRE

After waiting all morning for visibility to improve, four heavy tankers and a single engine tanker are now being filled with fire retardant and preparing to attack the 3,500-acre wildfire west of Boulder. A helicopter also is on its way to fill its sling with water in Barker Reservoir near Nederland before it too flies to the Fourmile Canyon fire.
Gov. Bill Ritter and Boulder Sheriff Joe Pelle were to tour the fire area and are expected to discuss their findings after 1 p.m.

At a 12:15 p.m. briefing, Boulder Sheriff’s Commander Rick Brough said an inversion held smoke close to the ground all morning, making it impossible for planes to know where to drop retardant or water. Those conditions are now improving. READ MORE…

DO WE NEED $75,000 A YEAR TO BE HAPPY?

People say money doesn’t buy happiness. Except, according to a new study from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, it sort of does — up to about $75,000 a year. The lower a person’s annual income falls below that benchmark, the unhappier he or she feels. But no matter how much more than $75,000 people make, they don’t report any greater degree of happiness.

Before employers rush to hold — or raise — everyone’s salary to $75,000, the study points out that there are actually two types of happiness. There’s your changeable, day-to-day mood: whether you’re stressed or blue or feeling emotionally sound. Then there’s the deeper satisfaction you feel about the way your life is going — the kind of thing Tony Robbins tries to teach you. While having an income above the magic $75,000 cutoff doesn’t seem to have an impact on the former (emotional well-being), it definitely improves people’s Robbins-like life satisfaction. In other words, the more people make above $75,000, the more they feel their life is working out on the whole. READ MORE…

CHURCH ‘PRAYING’ ABOUT PLAN TO BURN QURAN, PASTER SAYS AFTER WARNING

A church planning to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11 is ‘definitely praying’ about the controversial demonstration, its pastor said after Gen. David Petraeus warned it would put in danger the lives of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

In an interview on CNN, Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Fla., appeared to suggest church members might decide not to go ahead with the controversial demonstration. Jones, author of a book called “Islam is of The Devil,” told CNN’s “American Morning” show that the burning was designed to send a message to radical Islam. READ MORE…

Appearing at a union rally in Wisconsin to mark Labor Day, President Barack Obama took a moment to depart from his speech, offering an apparently candid reaction to the rhetoric of his most wealthy and powerful critics: the entrenched “special interests” that dominate Washington, D.C. Remarking on efforts to bolster America’s middle class, Obama noted his agenda has often brushed up against that of the wealthy.

“Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time, and they’re not always happy with me,” the president said. “They talk about me like a dog. That’s not in my prepared remarks, but it’s true.” “The line was a rare departure from a president who normally sticks close to the text of his speech and may forecast a more aggressive tone on the part of Obama as the midterms approach,” CNN noted. REPUBLICANS MAKING GAINS AGAINST DEMOCRATS AHEAD OF MIDTERM ELECTIONS

Republicans are heading into the final weeks of the midterm campaign with the political climate highly in their favor, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Americans are increasingly frustrated by a lack of economic progress, deeply dissatisfied with the federal government and critical of President Obama’s leadership.

For the first time in more than four years, Republicans run about evenly with Democrats on the basic question of which party they trust to handle the nation’s biggest problems. Among registered voters, 40 percent say they have more confidence in Democrats and 38 percent say they have more trust in Republicans. Three months ago, Democrats had a 12-point advantage. MATALIN: 90% CHANCE GOP TAKES BOTH HOUSE AND SENATE

That’s what Republican strategist Mary Matalin told me this morning after seeing this poll number: by 7 points (53 to 40) voters support Republican congressional candidates over Democrats, the largest margin the history of our poll. Matalin compared the current political environment to 1992 when President H.W. Bush lost his reelection bid in the midst of a frustrated electorate.

“It was about the deficit which is a framework for the size and the scope and the reach and the intrusion and the advocacy of government,” Matalin said this morning. “That is replaying itself out right here. This is not a petulant, angry, anti-Obama thing. This is against the reach, the over-reach of government on his watch. And the one party control of over-reaching.” READ MORE…

RICHARD TRUMKA REMINDS US OF WHAT REPUB OBSTRUCTION HAS DONE TO THE ECONOMY

CNN’s Candy Crowley sat down with the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka and the National Small Business Association President Todd McCracken to discuss jobs and the economy. Trumka reminded the viewers just who put the economy into the ditch in the first place, that everyone knew the stimulus bill was too small but it was all that could get passed due to the Republican obstruction in the Senate and that there are 400 bills sitting on the doorstep of the Senate that also have not been passed because of Republican obstruction. Most have not even been allowed to come up for a vote. As Trumka notes much of what’s in those bills would be helping our economy now.

Republicans seem determined to take this country into a ditch if it means them winning the mid-term elections. They’d be less likely to be rewarded for it if we had a few more like Trumka on the television not allowing our media to give them a pass for their behavior and having Republicans come on the air day after day and claim that the stimulus failed completely and we just need more tax cuts to revive the economy without being challenged. LINDSEY GRAHAM WANTS OBAMA TO COME ‘BACK TO THE MIDDLE’ HE NEVER LEFT

Lindsey Graham apparently thinks that President Obama hasn’t reached out to Republicans quite enough and that him “governing from the left” is the source of his woes and those of Democrats this midterm election.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) thinks he knows exactly what would improve President Obama’s political fortunes. Take a wild guess what he suggests. “The only way the president could possibly survive is come back to the middle,” Graham said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” [...] Graham accused Obama as running as a centrist but governing “from the left,” acquiescing to the politics and agenda of the House. The South Carolinian added that the White House’s agenda has been the “most liberal agenda of modern times.” READ MORE…
