About Mario

mariosolismarich.gifAs one of the newest talk shows on Progressive Talk, Mario Solis-Marich leads a passionate, thought-provoking weekly discussion on issues that make a difference to everyone.

Mario says This show is for the people that make America work, not for those people that are trying to work over America. The robber barons are in charge, but lucky for us, they run out of the room when the lights are turned on.

Mario has served as a political campaign consultant and a public affairs and communications advocate for over 20 years. However each week he will take off the tie and talk straight to the men and women that really create the jobs, raise the families, and need to take back the country.

Mario proudly says I am not here to run a campaign strategy, I am here to talk to the men and women that can’t make heads or tails of the guys in charge of the country. I am not here to explain what those in power are doing. I am here to say ‘you don’t understand what they are doing, because what their doing doesn’t make sense’. Mario has devoted his life to progressive causes and can be heard every day from 4 PM to 7 PM MT on Colorados Progressive Talk AM760 and weekly on KTLK AM1150. When he is off of work you can find him in search of the perfect Margarita, the tastiest meal, and the best of what he calls the greatest cities on earth.

I have seen the light concerning giving in-state tuition to undocumented residents in Colorado. If, as you say, it makes sense from an economic perspective, then why not offer in-state tuition rates to citizens outside of Colorado? I also don’t think it is fair to refuse undocumented residents the rights that were fought for by Americans, many times with blood, even though those undocumented residents did not share in those sacrifices. The idea that the United States should try to protect a higher standard of living, without giving it away for free to undocumented residents from Mexico is appalling. If it means that the lazy US citizen should have to accept 1/2 the wages for working in the trade industries, such as construction, when they are forced to complete with undocumeted laborers from Mexico, then so be it. It’s not like US citizens have a right to a higher standard of living, just because their fore-fathers paid in blood for it, generations past. The US needs to absorb the poverty of Mexico, and endure the violence of Mexican drug cartels, because it is for the best of the Mexican people. You are so right Mario, I have seen the light.

I was listening to your show on Ward Churchill , I don’t know if you ever said it. But regardless of free speech issues the man said something that was insensitive and rather evil. Still as democrats we must uphold free speech and I understand that , but seriously a man as arrogant as him needs something like this to happen to him. It’s karma, after all he didn’t care about the grieving relatives who were in pain when he compared their murdered relatives to eichman. He needs to feel some pain to become a better human being,
after all even with my most liberal friends if I said something that wrong , they would be pissed off at me. So yes , on the level of free speech, this situation, is just a excuse to get rid of a controversial person which is wrong; however on a personal level the arrogant jerk needs to come down from his lofty perch and feel some pain so that he can think about the feelings of others. After all he’s closer to Eichman than people flying into buildings are , he like Eichman didn’t care about the deaths of thousand of people, and he classified them all together of being guilty of something. Has anyone pointed this out to him? oh well, But I understand how it seems that the college is giving in to the rightwingers. Many of the Right wing speakers say JUST as repulsive things and noone brings them down. Perhaps like Ward they will someday feel some of the pain their words have caused too and as they plummet down suddenly realize that they are NO better than anyone else.

Hello Mario

I think I went to High School with you. I was class of 79 at Marshall!! Anyhow, I like your show a lot and I thought I would address a caller “Charles” I believe, who asked about polygamy and bigomy. An argument against the comparison to gay mariage, would be that both the Mormon Church and Muslim religion are pretty anti women in many ways, and the polygamy involves one man and many women, not the other way around. Additionally, they are often forced marriages, where the female has little or no no choice.

Mario,

Your call for “some type of enforced media” will apply to your station as well. How would like sharing a studio with Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage? Stop with the euphemisms (enforced media) and tell it straight: censorship.
I am old school and still belived in the First Ammendment.

Are you aware that Rush Limbaugh SUED a conservative organization, the Legal Affairs Council over the Fairness Doctrine?

The Legal Affairs Council was mailing fund-raising letters seeking to defend Rush Limbaugh and other talk show hosts against the Fairness Doctrine under the Clinton Administration.

Rush Limbaugh SUED the Legal Affairs Council for “fraud” for claiing that the Fairness Doctrine was a threat to Rush Limbaugh.

So now when Rush Limbaugh complains about the Fairness Doctrine, he previously SUED a conservative organization claiming that it was fraudulent to say that Rush was threatened by the Fairness Doctrine OR WOULD BE HURT BY IT.

The case is…

Mario.. you leave me puzzled by this Fairness Doctrine principle you and former Pres Clinton and others keep bringing up.

Freedom of speech should be a fundamental American right, whether it’s on paper, over the airwaves or in a blog.

I realize the FCC governs airwaves, but am appalled by any attempt to apply it to the PC of the message.

The print media, whom many believe lean strongly left, are not subjected to such scrutiny (thanks to our Founders), why radio talk hosts? Since the FCC licenses bandwidths, such fairness would also have to be extended to bloggers as well, would it not? Recall the impact bloggers had on Obama’s election.

Why not convince Mr. Clinton to host a talk show? He’s a great talker. I’d love to see him mano a mano against Limbaugh.

I heard you talking about giving guantanamo back to cuba a few minutes ago while driving home. I have a better idea: Negotiate with Cuba to make a joint gift of the place to the World Court and the UN as a prison for persons convicted of crimes against humanity, in particular torturers and enablerers of torture. This would be an answer to
a question about where to imprison a convicted ex-President. Just thinking ahead…

I saw your podcast on the PBS Travesty of allowing the documentary on WWII to exclude our role.

I am well known on many blogs as always declaring that same fact. I served in the USMC 73-82, My Brother served in both the US Army & Marines 69-78 and my father did Island hopping and landed as part of the occupation forces as an MP guarded the peace in his sector. He saw plenty of action.

I say all of that to declare that we are vested in the fabric of this nation.

When my father returned from WWII he relocated to Dell City Texas where he rented a farm and worked side by side with the braceros, POW’s and gringos. As a vet he fought another battle at home as he advocated of His and the Bracero’s rights.

He spoke many times of the segregation and tribulations of being in a white man’s army. But he handled his business in a way that I am proud of what he and we did and am livid at PBS’s allowing our contributions to be discarded. ‘Chale’ !

My father was there for Eisenhours’ operation “Wetback”. He saw Gringo farm operators call the migra on themselves (On payday).

I have posted numerous threads on how the US owe’s it’s bread basket to the Mexican Bracero.

I have posted on how the US Agricultural Community is losing legacies and ancenstral knowledge as the children of the once “Immigrant Farm Worker” is now replaced by a system designed by Honeywell.

Just like the US bought Liberia for the blacks after the Civil War, as a feeble attempt to renumerate (or get rid of) a black community it had injured, I think there should be reparations for Aztlan. But that is another story.

Like I prefaced above we are vested. My Abuela born in El Paso in 1900 was a natural born citizen but we always remained close to the land and it’s people.

Thanks for bring to light our role in this present “Culture WAR”. Because I always say that discrimination does not always come in the gorm of harrsment but many in the times of form of “Being Ignored or Marginalized”.

To me this is the worst kind of discrimination because it attempts to make you null and void. And to that I say “CHALE:!!

If you could save a honorable man from going to federal prison, would you?

You can help save an law-biding citizen from going to federal prison by simply covering his story.

That honorable man is Charles C. Lynch the former operator of the medical marijuana dispensary called Central Coast Compassionate Caregivers in Morro Bay, Ca. By some estimates Charlie faces up 100 years in federal prison. However, anytime behind bars would be a travesty of justice in this situation.

Charles did everything he could to follow the laws governing medical marijuana dispensaries in California. He called the DEA months before opening his location to inquire about the laws. He was told by a DEA agent that “it’s up to the cities and counties to decide how to handle that [medical marijuana dispensary] matter”.

So Charlie worked closely with the city of Morro Bay and the county of San Luis Obispo to obtain a business license which clearly stated “medical marijuana dispensary” and a nursery permit to sell cloned medical marijuana plants. He followed all his business license requirements, city regulations, county restrictions and state laws.

However, the local San Luis Obispo County Sheriff doesn’t like medical marijuana and apparently doesn’t like following California law. And after 11 months of investigating Charles, his employees, his patients, and his dispensary and NOT finding anything to justify a state-issued search warrant, the local Sheriff called the DEA.

Together both law enforcement agencies forced their way into Charlie’s house and place of business with para-military-style actions, uniforms and weapons. At his home they forced Charlie to the ground naked. At his dispensary, they terrorized his patients and employees taking everything relevant.

Charlie was allowed to re-open his dispensary by local authorities but the DEA eventually sent a letter threatening to take all of the landlord’s property away if he didn’t evict the medical marijuana dispensary from the building.

CCCC was the only medical marijuana dispensary in San Luis Obispo County. Charlie was out of work and more than 2,000 patients with doctor’s recommendation to use medical marijuana lost their safe access to medicine that helps their chronic conditions and terminal illnesses.

Eventually the DEA and local sheriff’s department came back and arrested Charlie at his home and violated his rights by covertly taping the incident and not allowing him to speak with his lawyer. This evidence was eventually not allowed into the case due to the illegal conduct of the DEA.

Charlie’s family had to post $400,000 bail with their own property and money to get Charlie out of jail but he was still restricted to house arrest with an ankle bracelet. Drew Carey & ReasonTV did a video about this situation and have followed the story. Check out http://www.reason.tv for more. Rick Ray Films is working on a full documentary of this story.

If Charlie’s bail amount seems excessive, that’s because it is. Especially in comparison to the $5,000 bail set for a San Luis Obispo sheriff’s deputy who is accused of child pornography and who only faces up 10 year in prison. (yes, the same department that investigated, raided, arrested, and eventually testified against Charlie).

The disparity in these two bails and sentencing shows the grave injustice of mandatory minimums, sentencing guidelines, bail amounts and the federal government’s civil war on drugs as opposed to protecting our children from REAL predators.

During the trial the prosecution painted Charlie like a major drug cartel leader to the jury. They said Charlie made over $2 million but what they don’t say is that the expenses for running the dispensary, paying the employees and taxes far exceeded that amount and the dispensary was in debt at the time of its closure and remains in debt to this day.

The prosecution also tried to make it seem like Charlie was endangering children in his community by charging him with sales to minors. What they didn’t say is that Charlie ONLY sold to adults over 18 years old or to the parents or guardians of patients under 18 years old. Or that the Federal Government considers any ADULT under the age of 21 years old a minor in drug cases. Even though 18 & older can vote, go to war, and partake in pornography.

The only evidence of wrongdoing presented in the trial was that of a CCCC’s security guard who sold to an undercover officer miles away from the dispensary location (in a different city) in a parking lot of a Big5 store. The only evidence presented connecting Charlie to that wrongdoing was that said security guard was employed at CCCC and the name of the stain sold: Diesel.

Diesel was a name of a strain that CCCC had and it was also the name of a strain sold by the security guard to the undercover cop. However, upon inspection, the two strains were drastically different. The diesel strain is a very popular strain name. I have some sitting next to me as I type this and I know I did NOT get it from CCCC or Charlie for that matter.

On August 5, 2008 Charles C. Lynch was found guilty of 5 cannabis-only felonies and faces 5-100 years in federal prison despite the Mayor and City Attorney testifying on his behalf as a law-abiding citizen.

He wasn’t allowed to use the medical benefits of marijuana, state law, or all the facts as evidence in the case because of strict federal precedents. The jury only heard part of the story and was issued over 13 pages of more than forty individual jury instructions explaining to them how to deliberate in this case.

Within hours the jury found him guilty of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, two counts of sales to adults under the age of 21 years old, maintaining a drug premises, possession with the intent to distribute.

I also want to clear up one rumor. There is a DIFFERENT man named Charles LEON Lynch who is registered as a sex offender that is NOT Charles CORNELIUS Lynch who is facing federal marijuana charges for operating a medical marijuana dispensary in California.

So that brings me back to the subject title of this email: If you could save a honorable man from going to federal prison, would you?

If you answered yes, this is where you can help make a difference. Cover this story. Be bold, be brave and help an innocent may remain free by reporting about his story, PLEASE.

We wish we could contine to listen but the frat-boy banter is overdone. We especially dislike the crude comments from the staff (“the costs are out the butt”). We hope with the Obama administration we will see more respect for language and ambitious thinking. The joking between the staff is not interesting, clever or funny, except perhaps to those of you who are in the room together. Mario, please find something else to say besides, “the one and only Mario . . .” You can do better. Another suggestion: how about giving more time to callers who seem to have illuminating comments? Baca, Not Solis, can unite Democrats
By Barbara Flores, Ph.D.
In response to Mario Solis-Marich’s blog post, I whole-heartedly disagree. While he has his detractors, Congressman Joe Baca may be the centrist voice the Democratic Caucus needs at this critical time of change with the incoming administration.
As Mario mentions, two prominent Latino politicians have made public their intentions to fill the void that may be left at Democratic Caucus Vice-Chair, if Rep. Xavier Becerra accepts the position of U.S. Trade Representative. But what Mario fails to mention is that the Democratic Caucus Vice-Chair is someone who works with all of his or her colleagues, not just progressives and Hispanics. And in this area, Congressman Baca is clearly the more qualified candidate.
As a moderate-leaning Blue Dog Democrat, Baca is better suited to serve as a bridge builder between the myriad factions of the House Democratic Caucus. Baca also would be in the unique position of being a leader in the House who is not connected at the hip with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Solis, conversely, is known to be so close with the Speaker that many of her own colleagues have dubbed her a “Pelosi Spy.” Her selection as Vice-Chair would only fuel the growing concerns of a number of House Democrats that too many of the leadership officials and committee chairmen lack suitable independence from Pelosi’s line of thought.
Also, Mario’s comments in regards to Baca’s possible problems with the women of the Democratic Caucus couldn’t be any further off the mark. It is well known in political circles that Loretta Sanchez’s charges against Rep. Baca were refuted by ex-Speaker of the California Assembly, Fabian Nunez. And given Baca’s commitment to women’s issues in Congress (he continues to be the primary sponsor of legislation to reintroduce the breast cancer stamp and legislation to award women’s suffragist Alice Paul with the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor), and the numerous women in key positions on his staff, I am confident the women of the Democratic Caucus will see beyond the inflammatory charges of the past, and instead make judgments on character and substance.
If Rep. Becerra does decide to vacate his seat in the House, it is Joe Baca, not Hilda Solis, who has the better chance to unify Democrats in Congress. And a unified front is exactly what Democrats will need to bring the change that an Obama administration and policy platform has to offer.
Barbara Flores, Ph.D., is a Professor of Language, Literacy and Culture at the California State University, San Bernardino, and serves on the San Bernardino City Unified School Board in San Bernardino, California.

Chris,
The only warnings that Obama gave out 2 years ago to the CRA plan were that they weren’t giving out enough loans. Do your research. That’s the kind of change that we need. Lets push even more relaxed requirements to get even more people into homes they can’t afford. Its not just government’s fault though. If you aren’t smart enough to realize that a “interest only” or a “321 buydown” are going to screw you in the end, then I guess you should lose your house.

Regarding the “R” rolling comment. I love when someone has an authentic accent. I only have a problem with someone who sounds like a frat boy 99% of the time except for when he pronounces “Colorado” and his own name. It’s laughable at best.

Mario,
Good morning. I listened to a portion of your show yesterday and have a couple of comments….

You mentioned yesterday that you have been talking about how horrible the US economy is for the past two years. While I must admit that I have not listened to your show for very long, I find this statement almost laughable.

Your beloved Speaker Pelosi even admitted late last week that she wasn’t aware of the scope of the problem until late last week. While it has been very apparent to anyone that loaning money to people to buy homes based on “stated” income and easing the requirement to qualify for a mortgage was going to cause a problem, I don’t think anyone had an idea of how desperate of a situation this was going to create. I agree that the policies of the last 8 years have definitely fueled the fire, but when was the fire started? The Clinton administration with their moves on the Federal Housing Acts.

Your show is pretty much a car wreck for this 20 year news radio listener. I turn it on and the minutiae that you base your show on is unbelievable. Your rant’s about McCain’s being a “chicken” regarding the debates would have been funny if you were actually joking, but it was fairly obvious that you were serious.

One last note. As I mentioned before, I have listened to news or talk radio for over 20 years now and in all of my years, I have never listened to someone who talks SOOOOOO much without actually saying anything. You should listen to your playback sometime. It takes you 15 minutes to come to a point that could have been done in 30 seconds. Even Randi Rhodes can get to a point quicker than you and she is almost completely impossible to listen to.

….switches radio back to NPR…..

Ran across this article about oil speculators. Thought it was terrific. Please read the article because we all know how supply and demand works and this article proves it. The rich control it and the poor suffer. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26321642
